Our Volunteers Are Awesome

Volunteers are a vital part of the San Antonio Sports family. For athletes, coaches, and their supporters who travel to our events, like the upcoming NCAA DII Swimming & Diving Championship, our volunteers are the face of San Antonio, creating memorable experiences for participants and fans. After each event, I'm reminded of what a friendly, dedicated and knowledgeable group we have. If you've never volunteered for one of our events, please join us. Community service hours are available. Click here to register, or contact David Blank, volunteer coordinator at 210.820.2191 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              210.820.2191      end_of_the_skype_highlighting or If you've helped before, I look forward to seeing you again.

San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute
More than 1,000 people enjoyed the induction ceremony for the class of 2011 at the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute on Feb. 18. Always an elegant affair, the Alamodome was transformed as Al Marks, Jerod Douglas, Laura Neugebauer Groff, C. Marvin Gustafson represented by his son, Carl, and Priest Holmes entered the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame. More than $100,000 was raised, with proceeds benefiting San Antonio Sports youth initiatives. Hall of Fame photos by David Smith

Fleming's Supports Hall of Fame Auction
A special “thank you” to Mark Knezeak, operating partner of Fleming's Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar, for his many contributions to the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute. Fleming's donated their private dining room for the Hall of Fame auction meetings, two nights of discovery for 16 for the silent auction, two gift baskets of wine, and four $100 gift certificates. We're grateful for Fleming's continued support of San Antonio Sports.

The Valero Go!Kids Challengetm Kick-Off
The weather outside was chilly, but the gym at Kelly Elementary was hot as 300 students kicked off the 2011 Valero Go!Kids Challenge with special guests Olympian Josh Davis, three-time WNBA All Star Marie Ferdinand, SAISD Superintendent Robert Durón and the Burbank High School drum line, cheer squad and student athletes. Everyone had a great time doing Zumba with the kids as their inaugural activity. To see pictures of the kickoff, click here.

Over the next eight weeks, more than 160,000 students in elementary schools across the area are being physically active and making healthy choices, like eating more fruits and vegetables and replacing sugary drinks with water. They log their activity online or in a special journal, and receive healthy treats as they reach key milestones. The 2011 Valero Go!Kids Challengetm culminates on April 10 with a special field day in the Alamodome. To find out more, visit
