What if we told you we could take you to the most lush and bountiful place on earth? It's a place where pink dolphins swim with stingrays, manatees, electric eels and crocodiles. Would you go? Don't be afraid. It's at the Witte this Spring. Our featured exhibit, Amazon Voyage: Vicious Fishes and Other Riches is a delight to all your senses. And, as always, you will learn while having fun. Welcome to the Jungle.

All aboard! The voyage down the largest river in the world is about to begin at the Witte Museum. This exhibition takes visitors on an exciting journey through the diverse ecosystems, the vicious creatures known as the Seven Perils and the amazing people who inhabit the Amazon River. This journey is alive! Visitors will also have the opportunity to see live piranha, spot the camouflaged stingrays in their sandy tanks, crawl into an underwater viewing tunnel of a tetra fish tank, talk to Pepper the parrot and see several other species of live fish.


Amazon Voyage: Vicious Fishes and Other Riches was produced by the Miami Science Museum. The exhibit was made possible with support from the National Science Foundation. Artwork by Ray Troll. Amazon Voyage at the Witte Museum is generously supported by the San Antonio Express-News, the George and Fay Young Foundation, Tesoro, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas, Inc., the San Antonio River Authority, Aquatic Elements, True Flavors, and the City of San Antonio Office of Cultural Affairs. Tropical animals and animal care are generously provided by the San Antonio Zoological Association.

Members’ Opening

All Witte Museum members are invited to enjoy the newest exhibit, an array of breakfast delights and plenty of family activities prior to opening to the public. Call 210.357.1930 to make reservations. Space is limited so please make your required reservation no later than January 31, 2011.


A Night at the Witte: Amazon Voyage

Friday, February 4, 7 p.m.-Saturday, February 5, 9 a.m.


Grab a sleeping bag and be among the first to go on the voyage down the Amazon River! Become a fish biologist and discover live piranhas, other vicious fishes and natural riches of this great river. Cost is $40 per child (suggested age 9 and older); $15 per adult (18 and older). Call 210.357.1910 to make reservations.

The Witte Museum has developed a complementary exhibit to Amazon Voyage. Take an in-depth look into the history and culture of the San Antonio River through historical photographs and find out the exciting future in store. Compare and contrast the South American giant to San Antonio’s own jewel.

Dreaming with the Ancestors:
Black Seminole Women in
Texas and Mexico

Thursday, February 3, 6 p.m.


Join us for an engaging presentation and discussion by Shirley Boteler Mock about her book, Dreaming with the Ancestors: Black Seminole Women in Texas and Mexico. The author interweaves documentary research with extensive interviews to reveal the history of a unique maroon culture, forged from an eclectic mixture of religious beliefs and social practices. She explores the role that maroon women in Florida, Texas and Mexico have played in shaping and perpetuating this culture born of African roots and shaped by southeastern Native American and Mexican influences. Admission is $5 for members and students; $10 for non-members. Reservations required, call 210-357-1910.


Exploring the Edges
of Texas
Sunday, February 20, 2-4 p.m.

In Exploring the Edges of Texas, Walt and Isabel Davis recount their ultimate five-year road trip around the 4,000 mile border of Texas. Join us as they share their experience about leaving the pavement behind as they hiked, canoed and rafted into some of the most remote, unforgiving and spectacularly beautiful parts of the Lone Star State. Build-It! Science Family Day

Saturday, February 26,

1-4 p.m.


Join us for a day of science and engineering family fun while celebrating National Engineers Week! Participate in hands-on building activities that will inspire creativity to find simple solutions to everyday engineering challenges. Enjoy live demonstrations by local guest scientists and engineers. Included with museum admission.

Magic Lantern Shows

Join us for two spectacular Magic Lantern Shows, featuring a magnificent double magic lantern from the 1880s, The Rajah. Held in conjunction with Luminaria: Arts Night in San Antonio.

Help Us Feed the Fishes!

Mark your calendars for February 22, 23 and 24! It is time for the annual Witte Museum Phone-a-thon led by members of the Witte Society. Please answer the phone when Witte Society members call to ask for support. Funds raised this year will support the exciting new exhibition, Amazon Voyage: Vicious Fishes and Other Riches.


As a special thank you, all generous donors who give a gift of $100 and above will be invited to a special After Hours Evening at the Witte. Come by and visit with the animal caregivers as they care for and feed the visiting piranha, stingrays and parrot. We look forward to speaking with you as we raise funds to keep our vicious fishes well fed!


A Taste of the Amazon

MAX’s Wine Dive is partnering with the Witte to support and raise awareness of the upcoming exhibit, Amazon Voyage. Head to MAX’s to try out the new AMAZON themed menu item beginning in February. A portion of the proceeds from MAX's Amazon menu feature will benefit the Witte Museum.
