Friends of Big Bend

January, 2011

The Big Bend Ultra Marathon returned to Big Bend National Park on Sunday, January 16, 2011.  The race included 50K and 25K trail races and introduced a new RGV/Hot Springs 10K race.  Proceeds from the Big Bend Ultra go to the Trails Fund of Friends of Big Bend National Park, a fund dedicated to improvement of trails in the park.

There were almost 300 racers out in the park on Sunday, a record for this event.  Sponsors for the race include Dr. Stuart Crane, Cavender Toyota, Culligan Southwest, Morrison True Value and Whole Earth Provision.

To minimize the impact on the park, there is a limited number of participants. Everyone involved must follow strict rules, including a zero-tolerance, anti-litter policy.  Runners on the distance course followed Glenn Springs Road, taking in the park’s historical mines in addition to the mountain and desert scenery.

Full results, photos and race details are on the Big Bend 50 Ultra Run Facebook page.  Race Director Carroll Voss states that “we would like to thank our tremendous volunteers and sponsors for making this race possible.  We look forward to seeing everyone back next year”.
