140 Days at the Capitol for Children - Texans Care for Children
Texans Care for Children

January, 2011

Texans Care for Children
Make every day this legislative session a day for children

Children in Texas have never needed you more. Yesterday, the state comptroller announced our state will have $27 billion less than it needs to maintain schools, health care, and other services for Texans. This is after our state already made deep and harmful cuts in 2010. . .after the recession already left families needing help. . .after Texas already ranked among the bottom states for investments in children. Now—without $1 out of every $4 the state needs just to hold the line on services—Texas leaders say they'll balance the budget with cuts alone. They need to hear that kids, not cuts, are your priority.

For each of the past few legislative sessions, Texans Care for Children hosted a day at the Capitol when lawmakers were asked to focus on children. This year, with so much at stake, we need a different approach. Each one of the 140 days when lawmakers are at work for Texas, they need to hear that children matter. Here's how you can help:
1. Make 2011 the year you raise your voice most. Be ready to respond this session when your elected leaders need to hear from you about children. Set up meetings with your representatives. Join rallies and events. Urge your friends to join you.

Policy alerts from Texans Care will let you know when your action matters most. Click on "manage" at the bottom of this email to be sure you're on our policy action alert list.

We will be co-hosting various events at the Capitol focused on specific priority areas. We will share information on how you can join these and other critical events where you can join fellow advocates for children in getting out the word about a particular program or message. (Got an event we should feature? Contact us.)
2. On Tuesday, January 25th, tell your rep: "Children are the bottom line!" In two weeks, Texans Care for Children will release A Report on the Bottom Line, a new report about how Texas children are faring and what it means for tomorrow's Texas. Let state leaders know a strong future Texas requires meeting children's needs now:
Thank you for all you do to Put Kids 1st!
