September SamariTours are scheduled for 5:30 on the evening of the 14th and 11:45 a.m. on the 30th. These one-hour information sessions include life stories told by residents, a tour of the facilities, and an opportunity to ask questions about the agency's programs. Lunch is provided on the 30th, catered by Z's Café. Visitors are often surprised to hear about positive life changes made possible by Samaritan House. Monthly Newsletter September 2010
Dear Jacqueline,
When people arrive at Samaritan House, they are often at rock bottom, both financially and emotionally. Our strategy for helping them on the long climb back up can be summarized in the words Rescue, Nurture and Launch. Education is a crucial component of this process for many residents, and we provide opportunities ranging from tutoring in basic literacy to college scholarships. In this issue you will read about two of these programs, and about one of the supporters who help make this work possible.

Most supporters of Samaritan House have a personal connection of one kind or another to the work that we do. George Pepper learned about the problems of the gay community from his brother, who was a leader in the gay movement in New York City for many years.

On July 22, Samaritan House celebrated the successful first six months of our literacy program. Residents participating in the program, volunteer tutors and staff gathered in the Youngman Family Room to thank volunteers and congratulate participating residents.

A Celebration of Success

Education was once again in the spotlight when winners of this year's Samaritan House scholarships were announced.

It's inspiring to see our residents take hold of opportunities to get the training they need in order to get back into the job market. In these times especially, it's essential to give our most vulnerable citizens a hand up. If you'd like to hear about all the ways we help residents prepare for a better life, plan to attend one of our twice-monthly SamariTours.
