Southwest Key: East Austin Children's Promise Update
Juan Sanchez

August, 2010

Dear Southwest Key Friends and Supporters,
I am excited to inform you that we are making great progress with our East Austin Children’s Promise and our proposal for a Promise Neighborhood federal grant was successfully submitted. The grant, if awarded, will accelerate our East Austin Children's Promise work and the community transformation and education efforts we have already started, but even if we are not successful with the grant, our Children's Promise and work will continue.
Whether it was speaking on our behalf at our Children’s Promise breakfast, formally joining our advisory committee or becoming a partner, our proposal enjoys the support of elected city, county and state officials, community and faith based groups, arts organizations, corporations and nonprofit partners. These include, but are not limited to:
·      City of Austin Mayor Pro Tem - Mike Martinez
·      City of Austin Council Member - Chris Riley
·      State Representative - Eddie Rodriguez
·      Travis County Judge - Sam Biscoe
·      Workforce Solutions, Capital Area
·      Austin Community College
·      Huston Tillotson University
·      Central Health
·      Austin CAN Academy
·      Child, INC
·      LULAC
·      PODER
·      Boys and Girls Clubs Of The Austin Area
·      El Buen Samaritano Episcopal Mission
·      AMD
·      RunTEX
·      The Paramount Theater
·      Xenogia
I also want to take time to quickly address a recent story written in the Austin American Statesman concerning AISD's decision and refusal to work with and support Southwest Key.
We believe it is unfair to the children of East Austin for AISD to "pick and choose" which community to prioritize when ALL of Austin's students deserve a quality education and attention.  To be clear, we were not asking for any funds and did not ask to start a new project. We simply requested that they be at the table to plan with us toward meeting AISD's own strategic plan goals, and asked that AISD let us work with the local schools in this neighborhood.
Rest assured their decision will not deter us, and only serves to reinforce our efforts to fulfill our promise to the children of East Austin.
The Children’s Promise provides a continuum of support services to individuals from birth to college graduation. Thanks to our many supporters our community projects and middle school continue to flourish. We increased voter registration and turnout in the Govalle/Johnston Terrace neighborhoods, empowered local residents through our East Austin Leadership Development Program, provided opportunities for community dialogue by hosting judicial forums and a summer speaker series, and continue to support cultural arts through the Latino Arts Preservation Program, Hip Hop for Youth and Xenogia Spoken Word programming.  Preliminary results for the TAKS tests for our school, The East Austin College Prep Academy, indicate the school received an “acceptable” rating, and now has a wait list for the incoming sixth grade. We are also providing numerous employment and training opportunities for local residents.
While much has already been achieved, there is much more to be done. Please show your support our East Austin Children's Promise. Become a fan on facebook at and sign up and volunteer at our school or community activities at We’ll keep you apprised of other ways to become involved over the coming weeks and months.
We would not be where we are without your continued support.  All of us at Southwest Key, and the children and families we serve every day, are truly grateful to have such dedicated friends and family.
