The Big Show
The Big Show is Lawndale Art Center's annual open-call, juried exhibition. It has been an important venue through which emerging and under-represented Houston area artists gain exposure since the show's conception in 1984. The Big Show was formerly the East End Show, sponsored by the East End Progress Association, at Lawndale's original location.
This year Lawndale received 976 submissions by 396 artists. Guest Juror Paul Middendorf, Co-Director for galleryHOMELAND, Portland, Oregon, selected 114 works by 85 artists for this year's exhibition. Exhibiting artists include:

The Big Show 2010 award winners selected by guest juror, Paul Middendorf, were announced at the opening reception on July 9, 2010. $3000 in cash awards were divided among four artists chosen by the juror.  Two $1,000 cash awards were awarded to Joseph Cohen and Kelly Moore. Two $500 cash awards were awarded to Emily Peacock and Catherine Winkler Rayroud.

Please join Lawndale and Houston's talented Big Show artists for short, informal presentations about their work. Presentations start at 6 PM each night at Lawndale Art Center.
Lawndale Artist Studio Program Update
Lawndale Art Center is pleased to announce the residents for the fifth year of the Lawndale Artist Studio Program.  Artists selected for the program are the collaborative team of Stephan Hillerbrand and Mary Magsamen (Hillerbrand+Magsamen), Daniel McFarlane and Anthony Thompson Shumate. With an emphasis on emerging practices, the program will provide these artists with non-residential studio space for nine months (September 2010 - May 2011) on the third floor of Lawndale Art Center in the heart of the Museum District. The artists will have full access to their studios 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Each artist will receive a $500 monthly stipend for the duration of the program and an initial $1500 unrestricted materials allowance. Artists working in all mediums were encouraged to apply. At the completion of the residency, works produced during the program will be exhibited at Lawndale Art Center in May 2011. The 2010-2011 residents were selected from over 100 applicants by a panel of three arts professionals; Robyn O'Neil, Artist; Andrea Pollan, Director, Curator's Office, Washington, D.C.; and Robert Ruello, Artist and Lawndale Programming Committee Chair.
Hillerbrand+Magsamen, McFarlane and Shumate will give an informal presentation of their work and plans for their residency at Lawndale on Thursday, September 9, 2010 at 6PM at Lawndale Art Center.

Big Medium is extending the Call for Entry for the Texas Biennial 2011. As an independent survey of contemporary art in Texas, the 2011 Biennial is an opportunity to investigate and promote the incredible innovation happening within our great state. Now extended to August 31st, 2010, Texas Biennial 2011 will be accepting submissions from artists living and working in Texas. All entries will be accepted digitally via Artists of all mediums are encouraged to apply. Detailed submission instructions can be found on the website.
