Witte Museum

May, 2010

Get a sense of the people and places of 19th and early 20th century Texas history through the strokes of the brush in Texas Art: A Sense of History, on view in the Witte Museum’s Piper Memorial Wing now through August 22, 2010. The exhibition is included with museum admission.

This exhibition features 61 paintings from the WitteMuseum’s world-renowned Texas Art Collection which depict narratives of Texas history, illustrating the people and places of Texas. Featured artists include Robert Jenkins Onderdonk, Jean Louis Theodore Gentilz, Mary Anita Bonner, Porfirio Salinas, William G. Samuel, José Arpa y Perea, Ida Weisselberg Hadra, Carl von Iwonski and others from the Witte collection.

The Texas Art Collection is among the first and finest collections of the WitteMuseum, and is viewed as art for history’s sake and the foundation of historical interpretation. Through the guidance of the Witte’s first art curator, Eleanor Onderdonk, the museum has been acquiring Texas Art since 1927. This established collection features Texas paintings, prints, drawings, decorative arts, folk art, textiles and furniture that will be housed in the TexasArtGallery within the Witte’s future SouthTexasHeritageCenter.
