Kumamoto En Day In Celebration of Children’s Day in Japan San Antonio Botanical Garden

Join theSan AntonioBotanical Garden and the Japan America Society of San Antonio (JASSA) for Kumamoto En Day celebrating Children’s Day in Japan. Kumamoto En Day will be held on Saturday, May 8 with activities from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Botanical Garden. Take advantage of the Spring Plant Sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.


Explore the finely crafted structures and many symbolic features of theKumamoto En garden, a gift from San Antonio’s Sister City of Kumamoto, Japan. Celebrate the day with samples of traditional Japanese food and entertainment.


Activities for the day include the following:


Children's Art, Craft and Game Activities on ground in front of Kumamoto En JapaneseGarden:

Instructors: San AntonioCollege student volunteers

            * Paper "Kabuto" Japanese warrior's hat making            

            * "Uchiwa" paper fan making                                 

            * "Koi Nobori" Flying Carp coloring

            * "Otafuku" Face Game

            * Mini "Ikebana" flower arrangements w/plastic flowers

Kumamoto En Day is sponsored by the Japan America Society of San Antonio. The Japan America Society of San Antonio was established in 1985 to foster increased understanding and cooperation between the citizens of San Antonio and the citizens of Japan. As a non-profit, educational and cultural group, it has tried in numerous ways to make Japanese culture become better known in San Antonio. For more information, visit


And don’t miss our Spring Plant Sale—hundreds of spring plants expertly cultivated by the San Antonio Botanical Society Plant Team of Volunteers will be on sale.  Regional varieties and “water-saver-friendly” plants will be featured.  The Plant Sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 8 (Kumamoto En Day festivities run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.).


Kumamoto En Day festivities are included with admission to the Garden: $7 for adults, $4 for children ages 3-13, and $5 for students, military and senior citizens (age 65 and older). Group rates for groups of 15 or more are available. San Antonio Botanical Society members enjoy free admission.
