Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra

March, 2010

If you love the violin, you won’t want to miss Sarah Chang’s performance of Brahms’ beloved Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 77, with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra on May 7, 8 and 9 at Bass Performance Hall. This masterpiece is revered for its lyrical melodies and rich orchestration, and Chang is recognized the world over as one of classical music’s most captivating and gifted performers. Completing this spectacular concert event is the ever popular and oft-requested Pictures at an Exhibition. Garrido-Lecca’s Toccata for Orchestra opens the concerts on Saturday and Sunday. Music Director Miguel Harth-Bedoya conducts.

The concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday, 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Learn more about the music at Symphonic Insights, with host Principal Keyboardist Shields-Collins “Buddy” Bray one hour before each concert in the audience chamber.

Tickets are on sale now and range from $9 - $78. Buy tickets at www.fwsymphony.org or by phone at 817-665-6000.

One of the most remarkable violinists of any generation, Chang has matured into a young artist whose musical insight, technical virtuosity and emotional range continue to astonish. Appearing in the music capitals of Asia, Europe and the Americas, she has collaborated with most major orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra and Hong Kong Symphony Orchestra.

This season, she returns to the London Symphony Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra, Singapore Symphony, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, Oslo Philharmonic and BBC Symphony Orchestra. For the first time she will perform and direct Vivaldi’s Four Seasons on tour in the U.S. and in Asia with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, then in Europe and the United Kingdom with the English Chamber Orchestra. She will also perform the world premiere of a new work by composer Christopher Theofanidis with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Born in Philadelphia to Korean parents, Chang began her violin studies at age 4 and promptly enrolled in the Juilliard School of Music, where she studied with the late Dorothy DeLay. Within a year she had already performed with several orchestras in the Philadelphia area. Her early auditions, at age 8, for Zubin Mehta and Riccardo Muti led to immediate engagements with the New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Chang was named a Young Global Leader for 2008 by the World Economic Forum for her professional achievements, commitment to society and potential in shaping the future of the world. In 2006 she was named one of the Twenty Top Women on Leadership by Newsweek. In 2004 she was given the honor of running with the Olympic Torch in New York, and also became the youngest person ever to receive the Hollywood Bowl’s Hall of Fame award. She is a recipient of Gramophone’s “Young Artist of the Year” award, the Internazionale Accademia Musicale Chigiana Prize and the Avery Fisher Prize.

These concerts are made possible by season sponsors American Airlines, Park Place Motorcars Fort Worth, Renaissance Worthington Hotel and Star-Telegram. Promotional support is provided by Star-Telegram and WRR Classical 101.1 FM.
