UTEP gets $2.9M for science fellowships

February, 2010

The National Science Foundation has awarded the University of Texas at El Paso nearly $2.9 million to provide fellowships to minority graduate students pursuing science degrees.

The foundation's Science for a Sustainable Future award will provide fellowships to doctoral students seeking degrees in science, technology, engineering and math. The students then will build teaching portfolios through instruction at the El Paso Early College High School.

The aim of the fellowship program is to enhance UTEP's role as a Hispanic degree-granting university while helping high-school students make the transition to a four-year college. UTEP's graduate minority enrollment has increased from 54 students in 2005 to 86 students in 2009.
