Austin Group rasing thousands for Ethiopian town
Austin Business Journal

November, 2009

A Glimmer of Hope, an Austin-based charity, will host its first auction fundraiser this week, with the goal of raising enough money to build water wells, schools and health care facilities in the rural town of Burbax, Ethiopia.

A Glimmer of Hope organizers said the goal for the Nov. 6 event is to raise $100,000 through ticket sales and the auction. Ticket sales have generated $62,500 toward that goal.

The organization got its start in 2003, when it was founded by Austin philanthropists Philip and Donna Berber. Since then it’s dedicated about $35 million to programs to alleviate poverty in Ethiopia. The organization has also partnered with several nonprofit organizations, including charity: water, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, Whole Planet Foundation and Matt Damon’s H20 Africa.
