San Antonio Sports Receives Grant for Fit Family Challenge: Kronkosky Grant to Fund Program to Get Families Moving Together
Press Release

August, 2009

San Antonio Sports has received a $225,000 grant from the Kronkosky Charitable Foundation to fund Fit Family Challenge, a program designed to improve the health and wellness of San Antonio families through an incentive‐based, family‐friendly program that supports and sustains physical activity and healthy eating.   Fit Family Challenge will target families with children under 18 who live in San Antonio neighborhoods identified as high risk for ongoing health problems.   The program is scheduled to launch in May of 2010.  Fit Family Challenge will be a collaborative consisting of local nonprofits, school districts, area businesses, and local government agencies.

“San Antonio Sports is excited that the Kronkosky Charitable Foundation is supporting our vision of a healthier San Antonio through physical activity,” says Susan Blackwood, executive director, San Antonio Sports.  “Our city is the seventh largest in the country and regularly tops the nation’s lists of cities with high obesity and diabetes rates.  Fit Family Challenge, along with our two school‐based programs, will help combat inactivity and all the associated health problems that come with it.”

Fit Family Challenge will complement San Antonio Sports’ School Rock Challenge and Valero Go!Kids Challenge™.  School Rock Challenge is a school‐based fitness program that will begin in September 2009 in participating area elementary schools.  For 10 weeks, children in grades K‐5 will follow a walking or running training schedule during which they will cover 25.2 miles.  The Valero Go!Kids Challenge™ is an eight‐week program that encourages and motivates kids to exercise 30 minutes a day, six days a week.  The Valero Go!Kids Challenge will begin in February of 2010.  Both programs are offered to area school districts at no cost.

San Antonio Sports, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2009, is a nonprofit
organization whose mission is to transform our community through the power of sport. To learn more, visit
