true north Summer at Girlstart is my favorite time of year! This summer we have had tons of fun mixed with lots of math, science and technology- a great combination! Behind the scenes at Girlstart we are working hard to make sure Girlstart weathers this economic environment. We have been cutting costs, asking for in kind and cash donations, and pulling together an amazing team dedicated to changing the way girls view math, science and technology. Our cause is important and we are committed to empowering this generation of girls!

We appreciate your support of our mission and programs! Please take a moment and look at our wishlist or make a donation to Girlstart to help us through this difficult time. We appreciate you!

Julie Shannan
Interim Executive Director, Girlstart

What was your first techspiration?
Was there a mentor that inspired you to learn more about technology? Did you have a gadget, a class or an experience with technology that piqued your curiosity to learn more? If so, we want to know! Send us an email at or DM @girlstart on Twitter and we'll feature your answers on our blog!

Volunteer Program Leaders needed!
Make a difference this semester! Girlstart is seeking MULITPLE volunteer program leaders to teach in our after school clubs and Saturday programs. This is a great opportunity to work directly with elementary and middle school girls on hands-on science, engineering, technology, and math activities. Join Girlstart's efforts to educate and empower girls! MUST be available ONE afternoon a week to lead an hour lesson. Send your availability and reason you would make a good program leader.

Guest Speakers Impact Girlstart Campers
We have had an incredible lineup of guest speakers at summer camp this year! Each week, professional women came to speak to our campers on topics that coincided with the camp theme. We have had veterinarians, the UT Ornithology Club, dieticians, chefs, and restaurant owners come and share their careers with the girls. Thank you to Debby Cox who brought her miniature donkey, Henrietta, and baby goat, Dan, to Girlstart two weeks in a row! A very BIG thank you to Shelly Ziegler who brought her very BIG draft horse, Beau, to Girlstart for 5 weeks! The response to these speakers has been overwhelmingly positive, and Girlstart is so thankful to these women for generously sharing their expertise!

Did you know that Jupiter is so big that you could fit all the other planets in the solar system inside it? You can reserve Girlstart’s StarLab for school science nights and discover all the constellations in our sky! For more information visit:
