Teens Start Fresh at Phoenix House
Press Release

July, 2009

We are a Non-Profit Dedicated to Prevention, Treatment and Recovery
Teen Treatment

Is it really a crisis if your 17-year-old son tries marijuana? What about your 15-year-old—or his 12-year-old sister? Because that’s where drug use can start—with marijuana, inhalants, or the prescription pills from your medicine cabinet—and chances are you’ll never know.

The dangers are real—the health risks, damage to a still-developing brain, and blown opportunities for later in life. Troubling news is that the need for treatment far exceeds supply. The latest national survey found two million youths 12-to-17 in need of substance abuse treatment and only 150,000 receiving it. That’s 7.6% of the kids in need (while the overall percentage of Americans receiving needed treatment, at 10.4 %, is not much better). Read more »

Phoenix Houses of California Community Initiative
In early May, hundreds of people connected to Phoenix House’s community-based programs in Southern California took part in Big Sunday, a community service initiative in Los Angeles and Orange Counties that encourages volunteer support of local non-profit organizations. With the help of those on staff, in treatment, and in the neighborhoods, gardens were planted and fences were built at the women’s and children’s programs in Monrovia and Santa Fe Springs. Teens from the adolescent programs went horseback riding and camping, all thanks to community support generated by Big Sunday. We are grateful to all those who participated – and everyone who gives of themselves to make the programs stronger.

Phoenix House Academy Shows a Strong Running Debut
"I was so nervous before we got started...I didn't think I could do it. But once I heard 'Go', we got to running - it was all good," explained Gloria R., 18 year-old resident of the Phoenix Academy of New York in Yorktown.

On June 6th, ten Phoenix House residents participated in the North County News 5K Road Race.

The 3.1 mile race was the debut event for the Phoenix Academy Running Team, where two of the residents placed third in their age groups – a pleasant surprise for their first competitive event.

The team continues their training three to four times a week - rain or shine - preparing for  upcoming races in July and August.
