Brand new New Braunfels Foundation announces grants
Around Texas

June, 2009

The McKenna Legacy Foundation announced it would give nearly $900,000 in grant money to area charities.

The foundation was formed using the bulk of the proceeds from the hospital’s sale to Christus Santa Rosa Health Care in January 2008. Almost a year and a half later, it announced its inaugural grant distribution — awarding $872,876 to 21 different charitable organizations.

Communities in Schools, a group that focuses on assisting under-priveliged students, will receive $26,000.

The foundation took in approximately $70 million from the sale of the hospital, according to McKenna officials in 2008. It gave nearly 80 percent of applicants some amount of grant funding Tuesday. Foundation officials did not wish to disclose how much each individual charity received.

Tuesday’s distribution was the first installment of planned twice-a-year grant awards by the foundation, with the next round of applications being accepted by the foundation from Oct. 1 to Oct. 15.

The McKenna Legacy Foundation exists to advance the well-being of the New Braunfels community. The sale of McKenna Memorial Hospital created a fund that became the foundation’s gifting source. The Board of Trustees of the McKenna Legacy Foundation is committed to ensuring this is a perpetual fund and that a sizeable amount of the proceeds from financial investments will be gifted to fund the vision of promoting well-being within the community. It is a fund that will benefit New Braunfels now and for future generations. In addition to McKenna’s own initiatives, there are dozens of great organizations and existing service providers in New Braunfels who share these goals and aspirations. The Foundation reaches out as a partner to design and fund programs, educational efforts and services to deliver on the promise of well-being for our community. Visit
